“Mr. Price will see you now.”

I stand and follow the Cook County District Attorney’s administrative assistant down the hall to the corner office. She taps the door and then opens it. “Mr. Locke.”

Carlton Price stands to shake my hand, waves me to a chair across from his desk, and sits. “I don’t believe I’ve seen you since the fundraiser for the addition to the hospital. What can I do for you?”

I lean forward in the chair and broach a subject that’s sure to ruin his day. “I need your help with Rachel.”

Price sits up straighter, and his eyebrows draw together. The warmth previously on his face vanishes. “Maybe you’d better explain.”

I get straight to the point and am precise as possible while I explain my history with his daughter. I leave out the part where she and her ex-husband frequented adults-only clubs, only discussing Gallants and why I have a restraining order against her. I’m hoping I don’t need to show him what’s on the flash drive in my pocket.

“Saturday night, Rachel repeated her temper tantrum and destroyed tires in the parking lot. I decided not to call the police but to ask you to intervene. The last thing I want is more trouble, and I believe you may be the only one who can help. She’s going to hurt somebody or hurt herself.”

His shoulders droop. The fight is gone. “Rachel has been going through a rough period. I’ve asked her to get help.”

“Insist. She violated a protection order by getting near me and then pulled a stupid stunt. I have cameras in the parking lot. They are irrefutable proof it’s Rachel stabbing tires with what looks like an ice pick. I’m telling the truth when I say that I never, not once gave her the impression there was or could be anything between us. I truly don’t want to make trouble for her. She needs help.”

“I appreciate you keeping this out of the press. I’ll see to Rachel.”

I stand. “Thank you. Good luck in the election.”

He gets up, rounds the desk, and shakes my hand. “I appreciate your discretion.”

I leave the building with a small amount of confidence I’ve seen the last of Rachel. I don’t need publicity any more than Carlton Price does. I get in my car and drive to a take-out restaurant close to Kenzie’s apartment. With supper in the bag, I park in a visitor slot, get out, and make my way to the elevator.

I get off on her floor. I’m still a little pissed with her. I like that she has an independent streak, but if I want to do something nice for her, she’ll have to accept it. I grew up with people doing thoughtful things for me. My family was and still is giving and considerate.

My knock is answered quickly. “I hope Thai is okay.”

Her eyes flash wide as she steps back for me to enter. “It’s perfect. Come in.”

I put my briefcase on the coffee table and then place the sacks of food on her dining room table, then turn to face her.
